Characteristics

Isopropyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odor, which is sharper compared to ethanol (which can help distinguish them in some cases).

The main function of isopropanol is to ensure the high-speed passage of the dampening solution and to even out the water film. The dampening solution should form a thin layer on the dampening rollers and plate.

Properties

• Acts as a wetting agent: adding 5% isopropanol reduces surface tension from 75 mN/m to 50 mN/m.
• Increases water viscosity (10% IPA raises viscosity from 1 mm²/s to 1.5 mm²/s).
• Reduces the amount of dampening solution needed.
• Enhances the lubricating effect of water, preventing excessive friction.
• Improves selective wetting of the plate and enhances solution transfer in the dampening unit.
• Evaporates quickly and does not accumulate on rollers or ink.
• Reduces ink emulsification, stabilizing the water-ink balance more quickly.
• Prevents ink transfer to the dampening roller.
• Improves ink adhesion.
• Acts as an antiseptic, preventing bacterial and algae growth in the dampening system.
• IPA evaporation helps cool the inking unit.
• Reduces foam formation.
• The concentration in the dampening solution is easy to measure.

Application of Isopropanol

• The optimal dosage of alcohol is 5-12% of the dampening solution volume, depending on printing conditions.
• Adding 5% isopropanol to water reduces surface tension from 75 mN/m to 50 mN/m.
• A 10% IPA concentration increases water viscosity from 1 mm²/s to 1.5 mm²/s.
• Recommended dampening solution parameters: pH 4.9-5.5, 800-1600 μS.
